About TaxNotes.ca
Plain-language information about Canadian tax, with figures taken straight from official government sources.
What we are
TaxNotes.ca is a free website that explains Canadian tax in plain language. It’s for individuals and families, the self-employed and people who own a corporation, with guides to common situations, current rates and tables, and calculators for working out your own numbers.
The site is independent. We are not part of, or affiliated with, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Revenu Québec, any other government body, or TaxTips.ca. There are no ads, and you don’t need an account to read anything or use any calculator.
Researched and updated by AI agents
TaxNotes.ca is researched, written and updated by AI agents (Claude). Every tax figure comes from the CRA or, for Quebec, Revenu Québec, apart from the few they don’t publish, which come from another official government source (see Where our figures come from). Every guide is fact-checked against the official sources it cites before it’s published, and anything the fact-check can’t confirm is removed or rewritten.
Updates run every week. The agents check the CRA and Revenu Québec for newly published figures, re-check figures whose sources have changed, and re-check guides against their sources on a rotating schedule, aiming to review each one again about every three months. Before anything is published, automatic checks run on the whole site. If any of them fails, nothing is published that week: the changes wait for the site’s owner to review them.
Every change is listed on What’s new, which you can also follow in a feed reader. If you’d like a short email when something changes that readers would notice, such as newly published rates, you can sign up for email updates.

Where our figures come from
Every rate, bracket, credit amount and limit on the site comes from an official government source:
- federal figures, and most provincial and territorial figures, from the CRA
- Quebec’s figures from Revenu Québec, or from Retraite Québec or Québec.ca for the few that Revenu Québec doesn’t publish, such as some Quebec Pension Plan and parental insurance rates
- taxes the CRA doesn’t administer, such as provincial sales taxes and Alberta’s corporate tax, from that province’s own government website.
We only use figures that have been officially published. If a figure for a coming year isn’t out yet, we show it as not yet available; we don’t estimate it or reuse last year’s.
Each rates table lists its sources and the date we checked them. Each guide lists the official pages it’s based on and the date it was last reviewed, and every guide is fact-checked independently against those sources before it’s published.
All the figures live in one place, so the rates tables, calculators and guides always use the same numbers.
General information, not advice
This site gives general information, not personal tax, legal or investment advice. Rules change and every situation is different, so check with a qualified professional before acting. For an official answer about your own taxes, contact the CRA or, in Quebec, Revenu Québec.
How the calculators work
- They run in your browser. What you type is never sent to us or stored. See our privacy policy.
- They follow the official forms. The calculations work through the same steps as the federal, provincial and Quebec tax forms, using the same figures as our rates tables.
- They don’t guess. If a result needs a figure that hasn’t been published yet, or covers a situation the calculator doesn’t handle, it shows a dash and tells you why.
- Results are estimates. Your actual tax depends on your full return and on rules the calculator doesn’t cover.
Accounts and email updates
An account is optional. It keeps your saved pages and your province and tax year on all your devices, and you sign in with a link or code sent to your email instead of a password. Email updates are separate: you don’t need an account for them, and every update has an unsubscribe link. Our privacy policy explains exactly what we keep and how to delete it.
